McGillin's Olde Ale House, Center City East, Philadelphia Bar Review

Hooper ran the establishment with her nephew Doc for the next 21 years before selling it to brothers Henry Spaniak and Joe Shepaniak (who spelled their names differently) in 1958. Located on a tiny alley around the corner from City Hall, McGillin’s should be on your list if you’re looking for an authentic Philadelphia spot for a relaxed dinner or friendly drinks. For more than 150 years, McGillin’s Olde Ale House has been serving up cold beer, solid bar food and friendly service to its loyal patrons, who come in all types. "I met Chase Utley, Moose Johnston came in one night," Doyle recalled.

In 2007, the national trade magazine Nightclub and Bar included McGillin's in its Editors' Choice Top 100 bars and clubs in the United States. There is a ship bell and a cow bell behind the bar which the bartenders ring when they get a great tip. They also ring it to "gong" or "boo" a bad karaoke singer.

On those occasions, the bar is often packed with his regulars who’ve become friends and his friends who’ve become regulars. McGillin's Olde Ale House isn’t your average pub, and that’s apparent to anyone once they step foot inside. It’s a historic gem in the heart of Philadelphia, PA. The bar's doors have been open since 1860 and hold the title of being the oldest continuously operating tavern, along with being the third oldest in the entire United States.

BEER FOR HERE

Locals and visitors, business people and hipsters all seem to agree that McGillin’s is a fine place for a pint and some good conversation. "When I first started working here, I didn't know how long I'd be here. Then I got the job as a doorman, eventually, I became a bartender," Doyle said. During the week Philadelphia hosted the DNC, McGillin’s hosted MSNBC’s morning show “Morning Joe” hosted by Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.

McGillin’s served blue beer in honor of Villanova’s National Basketball Championship in 2016 and again in 2018. Le Bec Fin, which kicked off Philadelphia’s restaurant renaissance in 1970, closes and its sign is added to collection at McGillin’s. Deux Cheminees and Strawbridge & Clothiers signs added to McGillin’s collection. The former opened in 1970s and the latter in 1868. When it closes in 2008, its sign is added to McGillin’s sign collection. McGillin’s Olde Ale House celebrates 100th anniversary.

Local and National politicians visited McGillin’s throughout the week, the highlight was President Joe Biden (then Vice President) and Vice President Kamala Harris (then Attorney General of California). Third generation of Spaniak family joins management team at McGillin’s — Christopher Mullins, Jr., son of Mary Ellen & Chris Mullins & grandson of Henry Spaniak. Sign added to McGillin’s collection of iconic Philadelphia signs. A fire started in McGillin’s 2nd floor kitchen and burned down the 3rd & 4th floors.

OPEN DAILY WITH FRESH, LOCAL BEER

Besides being one of the oldest bars in Philly, McGillin’s in Midtown Village is also the entire city’s favorite place to day drink and watch sports. If you’re in Philly during football or baseball season and can’t get tickets to the real thing, there’s no better place to be. They also have a fireplace, so it’s especially useful in the winter when all of the outdoor beer gardens are closed and day drinking options have dwindled.

You can watch the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers Flyers and Union in a historic Philadelphia bar packed full of life-long fans that want a win more than anything. If you can get a seat, McGillin’s is a great place to watch the big game while you’re in town. The bar stocks a great selection of local beers like Yuengling, Yards and Victory, while the televisions are always tuned to the most important local sporting event.

He's also served then Vice President Joe Biden and many other national politicians, athletes and celebrities. The Sons of Ben, a supporter group of Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union, was created at McGillin’s! Bryan James, Andrew Dillon, and David Flagler founded the Sons of Ben supporters club on January 17, 2007, the 301st anniversary of Benjamin Franklin’s birthday. Philadelphia soccer fan Ethan Gomberg suggested the name.

You know that feeling you have when you get together with an old friend for the first time in years and you pick up right where you left off? That is what stepping into McGillin’s feels like; comfort met with familiarity and charm met with nostalgia. You can tell this is a place where core memories are made. Murph’s is an Irish pub in Fishtown that also happens to make some of our favorite Italian food in the city.

The tavern grew to include the oyster house next door, the back alley/washroom and the house upstairs. It’s a long weekend and that means one more night to party at McGillin’s. We realize that wait times are sometimes long & thank you for your patience.

Things were a lot different at McGillin’s back in Doyle’s early days. The bar only took cash, allowed smoking, and charged 45 cents for a mug of Genny Cream Ale. He didn’t see active combat, but the experience — his first outside of Philadelphia — changed his life. He’s still able to easily recite Korean words and phrases, and recalls with fondness the people he met there. Doyle, who lives in Andorra, was born in South Philly and raised in the Tasker Homes, where he was the middle child of seven in an Irish-Catholic family. Doyle was so stoic and observant that the staff thought he was a cop.

A few weeks later, in April 1974, he was asked to work Friday nights as a doorman and agreed. If you’re in the Philadelphia area this weekend, make sure to stop by McGillin’s! Enjoy one of our Cape May Beers on tap and indulge in some delicious food. Who knows – you might just meet the love of your life.

McGillin’s celebrates 50th anniversary with a new façade. Name officially changes to McGillin’s Olde Ale House. No pushover, Ma has a list of troublemakers who weren’t allowed in.

This month marks 50 years for Doyle atMcGillin’s, which opened on Drury Street near 13th in 1860,and in true Philly fashion, the bar is throwing a yearlong partyin his honor. Festivities begin Saturday, with an open-to-all party featuring surprise guests at the bar from noon to 5 p.m. Celebrations will continue throughout the year, with specials like Doyle dollar dog days, and will culminate on St. Patrick’s Day. He’s also met Chase Utley, watched Jason Kelce play cards in McGillin’s, and worked the bar during the Phillies 2008 World Series parade, the busiest day he’s ever seen. And that’s how Doyle, 79, a married father of two and grandfather of four, came to be the longest-serving bartender at Philly’s oldest-operating bar.

Fortunately, there was minimal damage to the 1st floor tavern. The band was playing “Light My Fire” as smoke filled the room and the crowd left in an orderly fashion, some even stopping to blow out the candles on their tables. In 2016 we installed a sprinkler system to ensure we’ll be around for years to come. Serves food and ice cream and perhaps, a few tea cups were tipped on the second floor.

In addition to these accolades, it boasts a collection of iconic vintage Philadelphia signs from bygone stores and businesses, like Woolworth's and the John Wanamaker Department Store. McGillin’s is known for being a place where people gather to celebrate milestones, big or small.

Awesome Things to Eat at Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia

In 1910, the bar celebrated its 50th anniversary with a new brick facade and officially changed its name to McGillin’s Olde (the "e" seems to have been dropped in recent years) Ale House. Catherine “Ma” McGillin, who had taken over operation of the establishment after her husband passed away in 1901, managed to carry the bar through Prohibition by hiring a chef. She served food and ice cream on the first floor and “tea” (i.e. bootleg liquor) on the second.

McGillin’s once again served green beer, in an unsuccessful effort to replicate the Eagles’ win of 2018. Troegs Independent Brewing became the official brewer of McGillin’s 3 house beers – McGillin’s Real Ale, McGillin’s Genuine Lager & McGillin’s 1860 IPA. From 1995 until its closure in 2020, the beers were brewed by Stoudt’s Brewing. At one time, McGillin’s sold more Stoudt’s beer than any other bar in PA. McGillin’s made history – celebrated 150th anniversary with giant party, visit from Budweiser Clydesdales and introduction of McGillin’s 1860 IPA. McGillin’s Olde Ale House threw open its doors the year Lincoln was elected president.

Multi-color flowers are perched on the window sill, and the neon sign “McGillin's Olde Ale House” hangs proudly from the top of the building. Philadelphia’s history is some of the most fascinating in the United States. Not only did our city lay the framework for the founding of our country, but we set precedents with our shops, architecture, bars, restaurants, and more. It’s no surprise then that the oldest bar in Philadelphia has a fascinating history, and it remains one of Philly’s go-to spots nearly 160 years after it opened. Ma McGillin finally passed away in 1937 at the ripe old age of 90, passing management of McGillin’s along to her daughter, Mercedes McGillin Hooper, one of 13 children to be raised on the bar’s second floor.

This month marks 50 years for Doyle at McGillin’s, which opened on Drury Street near 13th in 1860, and in true Philly fashion, the bar is throwing a yearlong party in his honor. He started going to the storied Center City bar regularly on Friday nights in the early ‘70s, when his wife would go to her mother’s house to do laundry. Billing itself as the bar that “outlasted the Civil War and even Prohibition,” McGillin’s Old Ale House, the oldest continuously operating bar in Philadelphia, is a major point of pride for natives of the city. After Irish immigrants Catherine and William McGillin opened the Bell in Hand Tavern in 1860, it gradually became known only as “McGillin’s” by regulars. You’ll find every liquor license since 1871, the year that construction on Philadelphia’s City Hall started just two blocks from the establishment, hanging on the wall.

The list reads like the social registry, including some of Philadelphia’s most prominent citizens. Its sign added to McGillin’s iconic sign collection when it closes in 1987. Its sign added to McGillin’s sign collection when it closes in 1997. Civil War ends, Union Soldiers, grateful for their survival and for their hard fought victory, return to McGillin’s to celebrate with Pop McGillin’s  cellared ales. Although Lincoln visits Philadelphia, we have no proof that he visits McGillin’s. Of course, we have no proof that he doesn’t either.

The storied heritage and classic pub ambience draw all types of bar-goers, from college kids avoiding the library to young professionals grabbing after-work beers, families catching an Eagles game, to retirees. They belly up to the bar, reliving the glory days. Generally speaking, McGillin’s gets progressively louder, busier, and younger as the night goes on.

Then in 1973, Arthur Gale's sister Marcia and her husband Orin N. Chadbourne, who had owned and managed it since Arthur's death in 1957, sold the property. The hotel struggled under a series of owners until 1985 when Portland developers Barton A. Forbes and Michael Marino purchased it. Under their thoughtful and knowledgeable direction, the century-old hotel has undergone a multi-million dollar restoration which has returned it to the appearance and operation at the height of its popularity. The building first opened its doors at the start of the Gilded Age, when the surrounding White Mountains were rapidly transforming into a premier vacation hotspot. Artists in particular were among the people to visit the most frequently, often staying in barns while seeking unique natural landmarks to paint. Recognizing the economic potential all those tourists represented, local entrepreneurs began to construct their own inns and hotels. Two people to pursue this line of work were Cyrus and Marcia Gale, who converted their family’s farmhouse in Jackson, New Hampshire, into a hotel called the “Eagle Mountain House” during the 1870s. The Gale’s farm quickly became one of the most popular places to stay in the region, especially since it was located deep in the wilderness. In fact, most guests could only reach the retreat after following a trail that cut deep through the verdant woodland outside of downtown Jackson.

To host the sheer number of travelers interested in staying at the Eagle Mountain House, the Gales eventually enlarged the building considerably to the point where it could entertain some 125 tenants. In fact, the Eagle Mountain House had expanded into an actual resort, which offered all kinds of recreational activities to experience on-site. Some of the events included dance parties that the hotel organized with its own orchestra. It even managed to be self-sufficient, with the Gales using the surrounding farmland as a reliable source for food.

But Arthur’s momentous stewardship of the Eagle Mountain House came to an unfortunate end with his death in 1957. His sister, Marcia Gale Chadbourne, and her family carried on his legacy for the next few decades, until her retirement during the 1970s. The Chadbournes subsequently sold their interest in the resort to a new ownership group, thus marking the end of nearly 90 years of continuous operation by the same family. Nevertheless, the Eagle Mountain House managed to preserve its fantastic reputation.

In the winter, the course serves as a vital section of the nationally acclaimed Jackson Ski Touring Foundation’s extensive cross-country trail network. The Chadbournes continued to operate the property and make improvements. In addition, the original hotel rooms were renovated to include private baths and in 1959, the swimming pool was added. With the Chadbournes’ retirement in 1973, the hotel left Gale family ownership for the first time in over 90 years when it was sold to the Clarkes and Kenyons.

Future plans include restoration and renovation of the property while preserving its historic character, ensuring the Eagle Mountain House will be welcoming guests for generations to come. He immediately left a significant impact on the building’s identity, overseeing a massive renovation that rebuilt the structure from the ground up. In doing so, he gave the Eagle Mountain House its well-known colonial-inspired appearance. Over the following years, Arthur Gale continued to enhance the appeal of the Eagle Mountain House as its national reputation grew stronger. Indeed, he specifically commissioned yet another massive renovation on the eve of the Great Depression that practically doubled the size of the building.

Eagle Mountain House & Golf Club has a history and heritage as rich as that of Jackson, NH itself. The extension of rail service to Bartlett in the mid-1800s transformed the idyllic artists' colony of Jackson Village into a tourist destination. By 1890, the property had expanded to Eagle Hall and Eagle Mountain House with lodging for 125 guests. Both the Hall and House were destroyed by a fire in May 1915; the barn and garage, located a short distance from the main hotel buildings, were spared.

Devastated by the fire and with his health declining, Cyrus Gale sold the property to his son Arthur, who designed the current Eagle Mountain House in Colonial Revival style and selected Roswell  Ward of Intervale to complete the construction. To reduce the risk of the new hotel experiencing the same fate as the first and many others of the era, Arthur installed the first fire suppression system in a New Hampshire resort. Under Arthur Gale's ownership, the hotel doubled in size with an addition to the southern end completed in 1929, matching the design and materials used in the original construction. Found in the heart of the White Mountains, the Eagle Mountain House & Golf Club sits on a scenic hilltop in Jackson, New Hampshire.

Ocean Liners vs Cruise Ships: Navigating Distinct Journeys

ocean liner vs cruise ship

The elongated low-rise profiles of river cruise ships carve an elegant path through many of the world’s waterways, transporting a comparatively small number of guests from port to port. Smaller ships can often mean better service, and luxury river cruise lines such as Scenic and Uniworld pride themselves on the high number of crew available to look after the whims of fewer than 150 passengers. The cruise industry has seen exponential growth in recent years, with numerous cruise lines offering a wide range of itineraries and ship options. From the largest cruise ships like Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas to boutique luxury vessels like Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Explorer, there is a cruise ship for every type of traveler. Some existing ocean liners, such as Saxonia and Ivernia, found themselves converted to cruising service.

Titanic vs. Modern Cruise Ship: Passenger Experience

Ocean liners have thicker steel hulls to withstand the harsh conditions of the open ocean, whereas cruise ships utilize lighter materials and have thinner hulls due to their focus on coastal and calmer waters. Ocean liners and cruise ships have captured the imagination of travelers for generations. Nestled in the harbor of Long Beach, California, the RMS Queen Mary is an iconic representation of maritime history. Today, the Queen Mary 2, known as the world’s largest ocean liner, still operates on the trans-Atlantic route, even after having made hundreds of such voyages.

Cruise Ships vs Ocean Liners – Measurable Differences You Need to Know

Cunard's transatlantic liner, Queen Elizabeth 2, was also used as a cruise ship.[4] By the early 1960s, 95% of passenger traffic across the Atlantic was by aircraft. Thus the reign of the ocean liners came to an end.[73] By the early 1970s, many passenger ships continued their service in cruising. This is in stark contrast with cruise ships, which take passengers to pleasant destinations on leisurely voyages.

Princess Cruises Teams Up to Offer Easy Transportation to Florida Ports

The advancement of air travel has significantly changed how people travel the globe. Speed and convenience are often favored over the romance of a sea voyage. The most popular route was the transatlantic crossing between Southampton, England, to New York, USA.

Titanic vs. Modern Cruise Ship: Safety Features

Ocean liners, from their inception to their current state, represent more than just a mode of transportation. This section looks ahead, exploring emerging trends, technological innovations, and the potential future landscape of cruise liner travel. This section provides guidance on factors to consider when selecting a cruise liner, ensuring a memorable and satisfying experience. One-week cruises to the beautiful Norwegian Fjords are also available.

Juneau Takes Steps to Limit Cruise Ship Passengers

The large cruise ships you see sailing out of Brisbane, Sydney, and other cruising destinations are related to RMS Titanic, and Queen Mary II, but are poles apart. Constructed of wood and powered by steam, Britannia could more or less transport passengers across the Atlantic on a routine and timely manner. As you might expect, the atmosphere aboard a cruise ship is a more party-like, higher-energy experience. It’s also more casual than an ocean liner, with optional formal nights or none at all.

Popular Cruise Lines and Ships

Today’s cruise ships heavily target the family market, so you will find more families with kids on a cruise ship. In the 1800s and early 1900s, sailing was the most cost-effective and safest form of transportation between Europe and North America. During this time, passenger vessel companies competed to see which vessel could complete the transatlantic sailing quickly. Speed was an utmost requirement, as these vessels served as a means of transportation.

Modern Cruise Ship Features

When it comes to materials, ocean liners contain stronger hulls comprised of a durable steel. Cruise liners are generally made of steel; however, they aren’t as strong or as thick as ocean liners. A cruise ship, because of its destinations, doesn’t need to be made as durably as a vessel crossing the ocean. Queen Elizabeth 2, another iconic Cunard ship, carried their legacy before Queen Mary 2. It is said to have completed over 1000 voyages during its near 40 years of service life.

ocean liner vs cruise ship

Ocean view cabins feature a window or porthole with a view of the sea, giving a sense of space and connection to the outside. Cabins with balconies add a private outdoor area where passengers can enjoy fresh sea air and private views. At the top end, suites offer more space with separate living areas, luxurious amenities, and often enhanced services like priority boarding and concierge service. Despite its fame and the luxury it offered passengers, the Titanic wasn’t actually a cruise ship.

The newest cruise ships today have short bios, low free board and towering superstructures that seem to just stop. These design choices create a lot of space for these accommodations. An ocean liner needs to reliably travel between two or more points, regardless of the weather and usually regardless of the season.

This forced Cunard, faced with the prospect of a rapidly sinking business, to change focus from the ocean liner business to cruise ships and recreational voyages to secure their business. Liners are ships which ply on a fixed route and/or between fixed ports. Liners can be cargo ships or passenger ships, although “ocean liner” is specifically used for passenger ships. Modern ocean liners offer diverse routes, connecting continents and offering unique experiences. The period between the 1920s and the 1950s is often referred to as the “Golden Age” of ocean liners.

The cruise industry is constantly evolving, with cruise lines investing in new technologies, sustainable practices, and innovative ship designs. From the introduction of environmentally friendly propulsion systems to the incorporation of advanced onboard amenities, the future of ocean travel promises exciting developments. Ocean liners offer a more traditional and elegant atmosphere, reminiscent of the golden age of travel.

While operating primarily as a means of transport, the Titanic represents the beginning of the modern cruise industry. She was one of the first vessels offering luxurious accommodations for passengers of all cases. And reprinted a shift in sailing where the vessel becomes the destination. By comparison, cruise ships sit high out of the water, with a less aerodynamic hull. Cruise ships are adequately constructed; however, they are designed more like floating hotels than for swift transportation, giving them a box-like appearance. So, let’s dive in and compare the differences between ocean liners and cruise ships.

And so the money and incentive was available to build stronger and faster ships, leading to an explosion of technological development in the industry. Cunard ships Umbria and Etruria were the last auxiliary liners to be built. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Jade, Pearl, Dawn, and Gem can cruise at 25 knots (29 miles per hour).

This means ocean liners will characteristically carry more fuel than cruise ships. The terms “cruise ships” and “ocean liners” are often used interchangeably. However, while both are types of passenger ships, there is a difference. Modern cruise ships continue to push the boundaries of innovation, offering an array of amenities and activities to cater to diverse passenger preferences. From water parks and zip lines to Broadway-style shows and gourmet dining options, cruise ships strive to create an all-inclusive experience that appeals to a wide range of travelers.

They can be put out if needed to help reduce a ship’s roll due to wind or waves. Ocean liners tend to sit quite low in the water and have a pointed bow. The terms “Ocean liner” and “Cruise Ship” are often used interchangeably, but actually they are different things.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ships and Itineraries 2024, 2025, 2026

norwegian cruise ship

These shorter sailings cater heavily to first-time cruisers and Florida locals who can book on short notice and drive into the port for a quick escape. In short, the best Norwegian cruise ship for you will depend on a bunch of factors, and which ship is best for a trip with your family might not be your top pick for a couple's cruise or girlfriends' getaway. Still, Norwegian Prima isn't necessarily the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for you. Whether you'll have a better time on one of the other 18 vessels in the Norwegian fleet will depend a lot on the type of traveler you are.

As mentioned above, the line also operates one ship (Pride of America) in Hawaii year-round. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. Norwegian doesn't have any formal nights, but there is an optional Norwegian's Night Out at least once per sailing, for which passengers are encouraged to dress up. You'll rarely see a tux or gown, but suits and cocktail dresses are not unheard of. See Japanese history in person as you discover Yokohama, Japan’s biggest port city, where the country was first opened to outside trade after more than 200 years of seclusion. The beautiful small coastal town of Seward, which is most known for its picturesque scenic views and many visitors’ attractions, is a perfect addition for your next Alaska cruise.

Lisbon, Portugal

The new program is only available to travelers living in select countries and as destinations - on cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, Asia, Bermuda, Caribbean, Europe, Panama Canal, South America. In August 2021, NCL signed with Starbucks a partnership for delivering the coffee brand fleetwide (on all liners by 2022-Q4) as well as on NCL's private island resorts in Bahamas (Great Stirrup Cay) and Belize (Harvest Caye). By this deal, Starbucks coffees are available at all restaurants (including MDRs), plus at self-serve stations at the buffet-style restaurant Garden Cafe (on select ships). Starbucks was introduced by NCL in 2018 (on Norwegian Bliss), while Norwegian Sky became the world's ever-first ship to offer Starbucks' Nitro Cold Brew (nitrogen-infused beer). Note that due to the ship's small size, some of Norwegian's signature features, including a private The Haven suite complex and solo cabins, aren't found on the ship.

Depending on the service you receive, you can adjust the amount up or down at the guest services desk before disembarking. In addition, a 20% gratuity is added to the bill at bars, extra-charge specialty restaurants and ship spas. You'll find an exclusive, extra-charge, adults-only VIP sunning area on seven Norwegian ships called Vibe Beach Club. The biggest of these areas is on Norwegian Encore, where Vibe Beach Club is an expansive private lounge with a full-service bar, cabanas and two hot tubs designed to hold up to 270 people — far more than on other ships. Some of the extra-charge restaurants come with a flat fee (the teppanyaki outlets are $59 per person, not including the cost of drinks).

What is NCL known for?

Reykjavik was just a small village until seeing a major expansion after World War II, but this popular cruise destination still offers a small town feel different than any other European capital. Soak up the culture and relaxed environment of Melbourne as you take in the live music, sip some perfect coffee and explore all that this unique city has to offer. The possibilities are endless when cruising to or from the City of Angels. Let your inner rock star shine as you explore the many wonders of Los Angeles, California.

Daily gratuity is an automatic service charge added to the passenger's onboard account each day. On June 6, 2022, NCLH announced an expansion of its fleetwide sustainability program "Sail & Sustain". Extending its animal welfare policy, the shipowner is now fully committed to responsible animal food sourcing practices (regarding pork, chicken, eggs, and seafood) within the global fleet's supply chain. On January 1, 2020, NCL became the industry's first major company to eliminate single-use plastic beverage bottles fleetwide (via partnership with the 2012-founded JUST Goods Inc). Norwegian Encore has no formal night, but there is Norwegian's Night Out, where men usually wear long pants (dark jeans are fine) and collared shirts, and women put on dresses or nice skirt-and-blouse combos.

Right now, the newest Norwegian cruise ship is Norwegian Viva, which debuted in August. It's the second ship in Norwegian's new Prima Class of vessels, which began debuting in 2022 with the arrival of Norwegian Prima. When you sail with Norwegian Cruise Line, you are cruising on the most innovative and accommodating fleet on the high seas. Our award-winning fleet was built for Freestyle, designed to give you freedom and flexibility. Choose your ship, choose your destination and step on board for the perfect vacation.

The casino on Norwegian Encore has more than 300 slot machines and 26 table games (including blackjack, roulette, poker and craps), plus its own bar. In addition, several Norwegian ships offer dinner theater venues with circus-type productions, and one vessel, Norwegian Getaway, features a magic-infused dinner theater show in a steampunk-inspired space called The Illusionarium. You might even find Starbucks stores on some ships (the one-year-old Norwegian Prima has two!) and there are Starbucks products on every Norwegian vessel.

Night Asia - Japan

On October 17, 2012, NCLH and Meyer Werft reached an agreement for the construction of two new Breakaway-Plus class vessels with scheduled delivery in 2015 and 2017. In September 2013, the two new boats were named Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss, through an online campaign. The "Breakaway-Plus" project's contract value was estimated to be EUR 1.4 billion (USD 1.92 billion). Two more ships were ordered on July 14, 2014, to enter service in 2018 and 2019. Pride of America is the largest US-flagged passenger ship homeported in Honolulu for year-round roundtrips to the Hawaiian Islands. Due to financial considerations, the other NCL America ships in Hawaii - Pride of Aloha (now Norwegian Sky) and Pride of Hawaii (now Norwegian Jade) - were later transferred to the company's international fleet.

Norwegian Bliss makes a unique stop in Icy Strait Point, while Norwegian Encore itineraries will feature Glacier Bay. Norwegian Sun is also one of the smallest and least kid-focused of the five ships the line deploys to Alaska in summer, making it a good choice for retirees wanting to visit that destination. Families with kids naturally gravitate to the two giant, activity-packed vessels Norwegian sends to Alaska each summer — Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss.

norwegian cruise ship

The exclusive, keycard-accessed suite complex called The Haven (found on 13 of Norwegian's 19 ships) comes with private lounges, pools and other tony features. It's essentially a small, luxury vessel that has been planted atop otherwise middle-class, mass-market megaships. These complexes appeal to well-heeled travelers who want a luxury cruising experience while also getting all the fun attractions, entertainment and dining venues only a mass-market megaship can offer. On the big-ship end of the spectrum, Norwegian's four relatively new Breakaway Plus-class vessels — Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape — are the line's premier offerings.

Feel the gentle sea breeze as you relax in a cabana at Indulge Outdoor Lounge. Or get into a livelier groove as you enjoy a craft cocktail while listening to live music at The Local Bar & Grill. Enjoy made-to-order favorites at Indulge Food Hall where a variety of artisanal mini-restaurants and food trucks serve everything from tacos to tandoori. Leisure days at sea, exciting moonlit nights, and nothing to distract from the journey ahead.

Today, it has become one of the more popular mainstream cruise brands and is part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, which also includes the Regent Seven Seas and Oceania brands. The ship will feature more than 43,000 square feet of outdoor space, more than one infinity pool and a cool dining concept called the Indulge Food Hall, which encompasses nearly a dozen restaurants all in one dining experience. So now you know which of Norwegian’s cruise ships are bigger than the rest and which are newer and which are older — but what else do you need to know before you book that cruise?

From October 2022 through March 2023, Norwegian Cruise Line offers a variety of itineraries ranging from 8 to 21-day sailings traversing the Panama Canal onboard 6x NCL boats (Encore, Jewel, Pearl, Bliss, Gem, Joy). NCL Joy is homeported in Miami (for the first time) for 5- to 7-day Western and Eastern Caribbean cruises. Western Caribbean roundtrips visit Roatan, Harvest Caye, Costa Maya, Cozumel, while the Eastern Caribbean roundtrips are to Puerto Plata, St Thomas, Tortola, Great Stirrup Cay. Out of Port Canaveral, the ship's winter schedule lists 7-day Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, all of which visit Great Stirrup Cay (Bahamas). Other popular destinations include St Thomas USVI, Puerto Rico, Dominicana (Puerto Plata), BVI (Tortola), Mexico (Cozumel), Grand Cayman, Jamaica (Ocho Rios). Starting November 2025, Norwegian Gem ship offers roundtrip voyages visiting The Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean island destinations.

The first of the Breakaway Plus-class ships, Norwegian Escape was likewise built by Meyer Werft in Germany. When Norwegian Escape debuted, it featured the largest water park in the entire NCL fleet. There are 17 existing ships within the NCL fleet, and 15 of those ships are separated into five classes (a few outliers are considered part of their own, single-ship individual classes). The fleet will increase to 19 once the two new Prima-class vessels have joined.

If you happen not to find what you’re looking for, you can even post a question of your own. At The Waterfront, an outdoor space that encircles Deck 8, passengers can sip drinks or dine alfresco. While the innovation debuted on twin sister Norwegian Breakaway, it just really works on Getaway, which sails mostly to warm-weather destinations. Although Norwegian Getaway doesn’t sail from Florida as often as it used to, the ship was built to ooze Miami, starting with the hull, with art designed by Miami artist David "LEBO" Le Batard.

Carnival Celebration Cruise Ship Review

cruise critic carnival

The downside is that this places many rooms and suites on Carnival Horizon in the ‘cabins to avoid’ category, as some get noise from below as well as from above. On the other end of the spectrum, some of the most sought-after cabins on Carnival Horizon are the Havana Cabanas, which have Cuban-style décor and lovely outdoor spaces overlooking a private lanai for Havana-category passengers. On "elegant" nights, you'll see a range of clothing from ball gowns, dresses that leave little to the imagination, tuxes and suits to the same shorts and tees people sport all day long.

About Carnival Cruises

This is a good ship to be sober on, because you’ll rarely – if ever – be asked if you want a drink, and even then, only on the pool deck. There are no servers roaming around the ship’s other bars and lounges soliciting drinks like “the old days”. Instead, if you want a libation, be prepared to fight your way through the crowd to one of the bartenders behind the bar. The carnival Hub App is much better than the Princess App I used in November. The Carnival process for open dinner times is far superior to my experience on Princess.

10 of 27,677 Carnival Cruise Reviews

I know, tastes will vary, and I could have let myself out. On the other side of the coin, the only bad comedian of the cruise was not really a dirty comedian, except for dropping the F bomb in his R-rated set. One day at the buffet, I used a serving utensil that was thoroughly sticky. I asked a staff member to get a clean one, and I gave him the sticky one.

Activities and App

Still, the sheer number of different free places to eat is astounding; there are so many breakfast and lunch venues, you might never eat in the buffet. Old favorites that used to be overly packed -- such as Guy's Burgers, the RedFrog bar on the Lido Deck and Alchemy Bar -- now have plenty of real estate to handle happy crowds. Most staff we encountered were seemingly overworked, unduly burdened and unhappy, with Carnival Celebration’s food service staff appearing unusually affected. Room service, as on all Carnival ships, incurs a small additional charge. These spaces are certainly unique, but almost all are under-sized for a vessel carrying this many passengers.

Find a Carnival Mardi Gras Cruise from $509

We found a spot between two sedans, but it was still tight. This was our 48th and 68th cruise, and first on Carnival. We are a couple in our late 50s and usually cruise with Princess, Royal Caribbean, or Celebrity, and have tried NCL, Cunard, and some cruise lines that don’t exist any more, like Sitmar, Home Lines, and Big Red Boat. This review is for Carnival Venezia on January 23, 2024, a 10-day round-trip from New York to 4 Caribbean ports.

I’m sure the comedians don’t like seeing people walk out. Production shows and guest musicians use recorded backing tracks instead of live music like most other cruises I've been on. The production cast seemed small (8) and the singing ability varied from bad to good.

Carnival Celebration’s Deck Plan Includes Unique Spaces, But Is Confusing to Navigate

Design challenges aside, there’s no denying that Carnival Celebration is a total win for multigenerational families from all walks of life looking to cruise together. Families and diversity have always been part of Carnival’s DNA, and Carnival Celebration takes that to the next level. Following one mid-week performance, crew repeatedly asked passengers to clear the entire Deck 6 area so that shows could re-set. Families that were having coffee near the JavaBlue Café, or reading, or playing games were forced to clear out for the sake of “resetting” the show – dispersing more passengers to Carnival Celebration’s already overburdened public areas.

We had stateroom 1354, which was a “Deluxe Oceanview” with the extra half bathroom/tub. Having the second sink and shower was a nice perk that I didn’t expect. First of all, I didn’t realize we had that type of room, and I had not realized the tub would have a shower. The sink is tiny and the room is tiny, but it helps a lot. The ship has 82 accessible staterooms with bathrooms with roll-in showers, wider doors and, where needed, ramps, in numerous categories.

Carnival’s accessible price-point and high-quality entertainment also works in favor of multigenerational travel. It’s a cruise that almost everyone can afford, and cruising aboard Carnival Celebration with family and friends is a treat indeed. For some, it may very well be their first introduction to the world of cruise travel.

On Carnival Horizon’s formal or elegant night, main dining room attire is fancier, with men wearing suits or dress pants with dress shirts and sport coats. Women wear cocktail dresses, pantsuits, evening gowns or elegant skirts with blouses. When Carnival Magic appeared on the scene in 2011, the cruise industry sat up and took notice.

The cabin was big, especially compared to our recent cabin on Emerald Princess. Princess does not offer a chair in a standard cabin any more, let alone a couch like we had on Venezia. I thought it was odd that the couch on Venezia was cheaply finished in orange vinyl, but I later realized there was probably supposed to be a fabric slipcover that the cabin attendant did not want to deal with. There were drawers under the couch that were broken or off the tracks. We asked the attendant to get it fixed, but he only “proved” to us it could be opened with great force. There was a false fingernail in the drawer from a past passenger trying to open it.

Hope your bladder is strong ( just saying) The men’s bathroom well one stall if lucky two stalls you hit the jackpot the automatic doors stay open when the men are urinating just might not have door at all. Better service, better food more variety , a-lot more variety of entertainment around the smaller ships. This ship is Great for your first ship you have nothing to compare it too. Buffet breakfast selection was minimal and repetitive. For example, bacon was not available many days, and was usually not self-serve when it was available. Some things I like were never offered, like salmon, pineapple, and English muffins.

Corridors are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and scooters and there are 22 lifts providing vertical access between Decks 3 (for the medical center and disembarkation) and 18. New to the added-fee list on Carnival Celebration are Chibang! These formerly complimentary venues – a combination of Mexican and Asian and the Italian-themed Cucina – are now free for the first visit, and $8 per person for all repeat reservations. Carnival Celebration also boasts a much-expanded Bonsai Teppanyaki venue just next to Bonsai Sushi. This interactive hibachi “dinner-and-a-show” concept features talented chefs whipping up Japanese creations in front of patrons, with no small amount of flair or groan-inducing one-liners that are fun for the whole family.

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of Carnival Celebration relates to the onboard service from its 1,735 international crewmembers. One of Carnival’s secret weapons has always been to offer up some unexpected free eats. This includes casual venues like Guy’s Burger Joint and Shaq’s Big Chicken, along with the Mexican-themed BlueIguana Cantina, with its tacos and burritos made-to-order. And, on Carnival Celebration, passengers can enjoy dinner at Guy’s Pig and Anchor Smokehouse and Brewhouse gratis, save for the drinks and a few select menu items that are provided at an additional cost.
